Hello!

This week www.FOODPICKER.org posted the following question:

“I have diabetes and my blood sugar is all over the map.  Could you please tell me the ideal blood sugar level?”

Blood sugar levels actually change depending on how long ago your last meal was. The American Diabetics Association and The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists both have guidelines set for blood sugar levels for individuals with diabetes. Since I believe that the higher the goal you set for yourself, the higher you will aim, I have decided to go with the AACE’s recommendations (they are somewhat stricter).

  • Prior to a meal: 110 mg/dL
  • Two hours after eating: 140 mg/dL (In people without diabetes, two hours is the amount of time it usually takes for blood sugars to come back down. If you have diabetes, this reading helps you know if you are controlling your diabetes or not.)
  • A1C blood sugar test: less than 6.5% (This test shows you your average blood sugar level over the past 2 to 3 months.)

The idea is to be consistent with testing your blood sugar. Compare one day to the next and make sure to stay close to the numbers the AACE recommends! If you would like to read more about the AACE and the information they have on diabetes, visit their website at www.aace.com. And of course http://FOODPICKER.org has lots more information as well!

Shoot me any questions, comments, or requests on some other information you’d like to see on this blog.

Smile! (:
